About Janet's Art....
The building in which Janets Art is situated was erected in 1875 and occupied by a gentleman with the name of J.H. Bliss who was a watchmaker and jeweller, and
specialised in the supply and repair of maritime chronometers, barometers, sextants and navigational instruments. This was an important business serving the busy
port of Maryborough during the 1880's. Visitors may even have availed themselves of Bliss' skills as a maker of artificial teeth!
Over the years the shop has served many purposes and it is one of the oldest shop fronts in Maryborough. In 2006, Janet Revill bought the building in a state of neglect
and transformed the interior into a contemporary art gallery and bookshop whilst still keeping the outside traditional character. The renovation won the 2006 Maryborough
Heritage and Building Award for a non-residential building. The rear vacant plot of land was also transformed into an inviting and relaxing Mediterranean style courtyard
with local flowering vines and a spectacular stainless steel fountain.
This beautiful shop now provides a relaxing, creative and stimulating atmosphere to browse beautiful books, search for unique gifts or enjoy delicious home-made and
organic food. The menu contains gluten-free and dairy free selections with seasonal specials and lunch is served either inside amongst the books in air-conditioned
comfort or outside in the shady courtyard. The finest, freshly roasted Di Bella coffee is served with an extensive selection of leaf and herbal teas and Janet's special
recipe for dessert is the delicious chocolate pistachio tart!
There is something for everyone at Janet's Art, with not only good food, beautiful books and paintings, but also art DVDs, prints, unique imported and local jewellery, an
amazing selection of greeting cards and really unique gift ideas. There is also a large selection of music CDs and live performances take place in the courtyard every
fortnight with a variety of music including jazz, harp, classical and folk and blues. There is no cover charge for this and customers listen to the music whilst relaxing
with lunch and a glass of wine.
Janet's is open during the week from 9am to 5pm, except Tuesday when the shop opens from 10am to 2pm, and Saturday from 9am to 3pm. Come along and
browse, listen to the laidback world music, enjoy a great cup of coffee and see one of the best ranges of art books in Queensland!
